What happens in a 24-hour period at an academic health center?

On September 20, 2006, more than a dozen professional photographers, OHSU employees and others set out to find out.

In dramatic and engaging photographs, they documented a day in the life of Oregon Health & Science University. From Portland to Eugene to Coos Bay to Bangkok, Thailand, they captured hopeful patients, skilled and compassionate healers, youthful and ambitious students, and focused researchers at moments of challenge and inspiration.

They also captured the vital work of hundreds of other professionals who make OHSU work: people who schedule services, maintain equipment and grounds, prepare food, administer programs, counsel and support patients, raise funds and more.

One Day is a visual diary of an enormously complex institution with a profound mission—to improve Oregon's health and well-being. It also documents an important moment in OHSU's institutional history - a moment of transition, vision and aspiration.

One Day is about understanding today; it is also about our hope for a better tomorrow.

About the Photographers

Robert Agli is a freelance photographer based in Bend, Ore. He shoots for select commercial and editorial clients.

Ken Anderson is an acclaimed studio photographer who works with the nation's top advertising agencies.

Cyril "Kent" Anderson is a freelance photographer and longtime OHSU employee who currently serves as a fire suppression technician.

L.E. Baskow is an award-winning photojournalist and photo editor for the Portland Tribune. He recently participated in the America 24/7 and Oregon 24/7 book projects.

Steven Bloch is an acclaimed photographer with numerous national and international credits. He has "helped people be authentic in photographs" for more than 30 years.

Thomas Boyd is a commercial photographer widely published in magazines and newspapers. He has won numerous awards in international photography competitions.

Andrew Daddio is an acclaimed commercial photographer with more than 20 years of professional experience. He specializes in people, lifestyle, editorial, corporate and advertising photography.

Jack Dempsey is the associate director of government and community relations at OHSU.

Xilia Faye is a self-taught photographer with numerous regional commercial and creative clients.

Susan Frohnmayer works at OHSU in the Health Promotion and Sports Medicine Department as a motivational interviewer. She has been taking pictures for many years and recently began showing her work.

Stewart Harvey is an accomplished fine art photographer whose panoramic black and white photos have been published and exhibited widely. His son was successfully treated for leukemia at Doernbecher Children's Hospital.

Tim Jewett is a former pre-med student who discovered photography while working as a malaria entomologist in the Peace Corps. He has worked as a photographer and photo editor at Willamette Week, The Oregonian and the Portland Tribune.

Julie Keefe is a documentary photographer whose work ranges from chronicling communities to working intensively with underserved youth through arts programs.

Jim Lommasson is an award-winning professional photographer whose book, Shadow Boxers: Sweat, Sacrifice, and the Will to Survive in American Boxing Gyms, was published in 2005. He exhibits his work throughout the United States.

Michael McDermott is an award-winning photojournalist whose work has appeared in the New York Times, People and National Geographic Adventure. His commercial clients include Volks-wagen, and the Ford and Kellogg Foundations.

Corky Miller is a freelance photographer and videographer. His work has spanned pediatric oncology wards, Mexican mountain villages and the office of the governor.

Chris Pietsch is a Eugene, Ore.-based photo- journalist who has worked throughout the Northwest for more than 20 years. His images have been published in Newsweek, Time and National Geographic World.

Rick Rappaport is an acclaimed commercial photographer whose work has appeared in numerous national and international publications. His clients include Nike, Intel and Time Inc.

Anne Rybak is a photography instructor and freelance photographer whose work features people and places from the Yukon Territories to Southeast Asia.

Michael Schmitt is a commercial photographer specializing in people images for advertising and editorial clients. Both of Michael's sons were born at OHSU.
