Ellen Magenis

Ellen MagenisDr. Ellen Magenis received her MD at Indiana University Medical School in 1952. Her first internship was at University of Iowa Hospitals in 1952, after which she took a hiatus to raise her children.  She returned to Medicine in 1964 to take a second internship at the Portland Sanitarium, now known as Portland Adventist.  In 1965, she was invited to help launch the Genetics Clinic at OHSU under Dr. Robert Koler.  Upon advice to choose a specialty, she began a Pediatric residency in 1966.  This was followed by a three-year fellowship in Genetics.

Since beginning at OHSU she has authored or co-authored nearly 300 publications and is known for her discovery of Smith-Magenis Syndrome, along with Dr. Ann Smith, in 1968.  Her academic interests include gene mapping, chromosome abnormalities and problems in sex determination.  You can find this Professor of Molecular and Medical Genetics, Pediatrics & CDRC in Clinic on a weekly basis where she sees patients with various genetic syndromes.    Her hobbies include reading, needlework and spending time with her grandchildren.
