Disability & Public Health Curriculum Project

The OODH Disability and Public Health course curriculum is intended to facilitate the implementation of a course that increases student understanding of why and how to include disabilities in the field of public health.  The course objective is to enhance the educational experience of students of public health and related fields regarding disabilities and promote an increased understanding and inclusion of disabilities in the field of public health.  The curriculum is organized by topic in nine modules. Each module contains key points to be discussed in class. To supplement the modules, we've included additional readings and a bibliography for further reference.  In addition to the nine modules, there are appendices that include a generic class syllabus and sample exam questions.

Topics to discussed in the course include the following:

  1. Models and approaches to disability
  2. A brief history of public health
  3. Disability epidemiology
  4. United States governmental programs and services for people with disabilities
  5. A personal perspective on the history of disability
  6. Multicultural views of disability
  7. The contemporary experience of disability in America
  8. Health promotion and disability
  9. The role of public health professionals
