ADAPTED RECREATION ACTIVITIES FOR FRIDAY MAY 9, 2008

The Celebrate Wellness conference staff and partners are so excited to be able to offer Adapted Recreation Activities! REGISTER NOW for this great event and see what type of things you can do in your community to help you get fit and stay active, year round.

The activities listed below are being offered as a "Pre-conference Event" for Celebrate Wellness VIII. They are for conference attendees and available on a first come first serve basis. Each activity can accommodate 12-15 participants. In order to accommodate as many people as possible, each attendee can participate in one recreational activity only.

Activities Check-in: 8am - 12:30pm, May 9, 2008

During this time, attendees will be asked to sign liability waivers. (Note: If you are not your own legal guardian, please be sure your authorized guardian is present to sign paperwork on your behalf).

  • Registration fee is $10, due upon arrival
  • Lunch is included for all participants
  • Afternoon participants must arrive at the registration table no later than 11:30am

Departing for your activity: All participants will need to meet in the lobby of the DoubleTree Hotel-Lloyd Center, 45 minutes prior to the start of each activity.

Transportation to your activity: Depending on the type of activity, participants will either walk, ride a bus, or take a van to where their activity is being held.

Friday Activity Descriptions

Biking: 9am - 11:30am

Join us for a biking adventure! We will have a variety of adaptive bikes available for you to ride. Handcycles, tandem, and three-wheelers. Even if you've never ridden a bike before, we'll show you how. Bring a bike helmet if you have one or we'll have extras Please wear closed toed shoes,comfortable clothes and be prepared for the weather as bike riding is done rain or shine. Come take a ride! Please be ready to leave and in the DoubleTree Hotel- Lloyd Center's lobby by 8:15am.

 

Walking: 9am - 11am and 2pm - 4pm

Walk-n-Roll adventure starts at the hotel and goes through the Broadway Historical district. During the walk, you will explore many different shops and boutiques while walking through the Broadway Shopping District.  If you are interested in picking up a local treat in one of the boutiques or coffee shops, please remember to bring some extra cash. This walk-n-roll adventure will be calculated on your very own Pedometer which will be given to you before the walk. This particular route is 2.3 miles which gives you 5300 steps and burns a total of 232 calories!

 

Dance Your Story: 9am - 11:30am

Get into your own inner groove and expand your own movements. Everyone has their own dance and their own moving story to tell. How does your body want to move? What stretches your limits and gets your heart pounding? In this workshop you will have the opportunity to take care of your body and expand your
awareness through dance. The dance exercises are designed for every body and mind. A collaboration between DART and the Disability Art and Culture Project Dance teachers: Yulia Arakelyan and Kathy Coleman.

 

Swimming: 1pm - 3pm

Let us entice you into the world of swimming as a way to get regular exercise! Join Karen Gaffney, who participated as part of a relay team that swam the English Channel, and Philip Summers, a certified USAT triathlon coach. They will both provide instruction and demonstration on basic swim strokes as well as fun movements and exercises everyone can enjoy doing in the water. You will need a swimsuit and towel. Flipflops, swim cap and goggles are recommended. If you need assistance with dressing before and after swimming, and/or any one-on-one assistance in the pool, you must have a Personal Care attendant accompany you. Lunch will be served at the hotel from 11:30am - 12:15pm in the Sellwood room. The activity will be held at the Dishman Community Center Pool. Please be ready to leave and at the DoubleTree Hotel- Lloyd Center's lobby by 12:30pm.

 

Bocce Ball: 2pm - 4:30pm
Explore the sport of bocce! Join Special Olympics coach Sabin Johnson in this fun sport of skill and strategy. Even if you've never played bocce before (or don't even know what it is!), Sabin will provide instruction and demonstration on the fundamentals of the game. Comfortable clothes that you can move in are recommended. Participants will be paired up to play bocce doubles with a mini-tournament! This game will be held in the Sellwood Room at the DoubleTree Hotel-Lloyd Center.


Beginning Hand Drumming for Recreation and Wellness: 2pm - 4pm

Group rhythm-making continues to gain national attention as an accessible, fun, and inspiring activity that offers numerous benefits (some scientifically documented) from building community to stress reduction. Through drumming and lecture, you too will gain insight about this popular activity, experience the benefits first hand, and learn how to bring this joyous program into your communities. Instructor, Jill Sager is a disabled drummer and author of the instructional DVD/Book: Beginning Hand Drumming: A Guide to Recreation and Wellness. She is a TOCA Percussion endorsed artist and founder of the highly acclaimed Hands On Rhythm and Drum School based in Eugene Oregon.

 

Tennis: 2pm - 4:30 pm

Tennis is a great way to gain and improve your physical fitness. It doesn't require a lot of equipment and people of all abilities can play. Everyone is welcome. We will provide tennis instruction, a tennis racket and several sport wheelchairs will be provided. Come in comfortable clothes and shoes. If you think you may or know you may need a sport wheelchair please indicate here. This activity will be held at the Portland Tennis Center. Please be ready to leave and in the DoubleTree Hotel- Lloyd Center's lobby by 1:15pm.

 

Rockclimbing: 2pm - 4:30pm

Ready to experience a great upper body workout? Want to learn how to rock climb or improve your skills? Join us for an afternoon of rock climbing at Portland Rock Gym. This indoor climbing trip is designed to meet the needs of each climber by providing instruction on beginner to intermediate rock climbing skills. No previous experience is necessary and all equipment will be provided. No specific clothing is necessary, but wear something loose fitting and comfortable. Please be ready to leave and in the DoubleTree Hotel- Lloyd Center's lobby by 1:15pm.

 

Activities Reminder Checklist:

  1. I have read through the descriptions for each of the activities.
  2. I have selected my top three choices and I have indicated my 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choices. I understand that every effort will be made try to assign me to my first choice!
  3. I understand that the registration fee for each activity is $10 and will bring the $10 (cash or check only) to the registration table on Friday May 9, 2008.
  4. I understand that I will be asked to sign one or more Liability Waiver forms when I sign in and pay for the activity on May 9th.
  5. I also understand that if I am not my own guardian, that I will have a guardian present to sign for me.
  6. I understand that it is my responsibility to bring any appropriate and necessary equipment, clothing, or any other items as indicated in the descriptions for the activity I am participating in.
  7. I will bring an assistant with me to assist me with me before, during and after the activity ( If I need any personal assistance care). The assistant can eat lunch with me and does not have to pay the $10 registration fee.
  8. I will arrive 45 minutes prior to my activity in the DoubleTree-Lloyd Center Hotel Lobby.
  9. I'm ready to have fun, get active and make new friends!
