PORTLAND, Ore. - Thirty-three students from throughout Oregon will get to see and feel what health careers are like as part of MedStars Honors Experience held at Oregon Health & Science University from Tuesday, July 18, through Friday, July 21.
MedStars is a residential summer experience designed to help high school students aged 16 to 19 learn how to pursue health career options. The Area Health Education Centers Program sponsors the MedStars program.
Students from rural communities, particularly underserved or ethnic minority students, who have demonstrated an interest in a health career are accepted into the program based on their letters of recommendation and application. It is a way to attract students of diverse backgrounds into health care careers.
The teens will get to see what a day in the life of different health care professionals is really like. They'll learn how to take vital signs, feel for tumors, learn about the musculoskeletal system and view a mock anatomy class. They'll get to experience medical research, surgery skills, neurology, genetics and dental skills.
