Walk/Run to Benefit Fanconi Anemia Research

WHAT: The Fanconi Anemia Research Fund is sponsoring its fourth annual Fanconi Anemia 5K Walk/Run Sunday, Feb. 10. Proceeds fund research to cure this deadly disease. Visit www.valentine5k.com for more information about the event and to register.

Fanconi anemia (FA) is a life-threatening genetic disease that leads to bone marrow failure and cancers in children and young adults. The Oregon-based Fanconi Anemia Research Fund is dedicated to finding effective treatments and a cure for FA while providing education and support services to affected families worldwide. Research supported by the fund over the past 20 years has funded landmark achievements by researchers at Oregon Health & Science University with wide ranging implications for cancer biology, blood disorders and gene transfer in general. Their findings have led to an improved understanding of genetics and the development of model systems crucial for the study of FA.

The organizer of the event, Peggy Padden, has had two sons affected by this devastating disease. Her 21-year-old son, Jake, passed away from the disease eight months after he and his 15-year-old brother, Spencer, were diagnosed.

“The 5K walk illustrates the grassroots support that fuels FA research. This is a chance to raise awareness and demonstrate our commitment to the research that gives hope to patients like Spencer and their families,” said Peter Kurre, M.D., associate professor of pediatrics (hematology/medical oncology), OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.

WHEN: Sunday, Feb. 10, 2008, 8 a.m. (day-of-event registration 7 to 7:45 a.m.) or online at www.valentine5k.com. A $30 donation for adults and a $15 donation for children younger than 12 includes event registration, a T-shirt and goes toward research support. Registration is $5 more the day of the event. Additional donations are welcome.

WHERE: Under the Morrison Bridge, S.W. Morrison/Naito Pkwy.

The FA Research Fund has entered a Challenge America contest where the top four charities with the most individual donations will win $50,000. For more information about making a donation to the FA Research Fund visit http://www.networkforgood.org/pca/Badge.aspx?BadgeId=109128
