INSTITUTE OF TRIBAL GOVERNMENT AND OHSU ONE SKY CENTER TEAM UP FOR TRAINING ON POLITICAL ISSUES
WHAT: The Institute of Tribal Government, in partnership with the Oregon Health & Science University One Sky Center, is offering a two-day training regarding the official and political federal relations scenarios at it relates to Indian Country and the Indian Affairs portfolio, including legislative, budget, appropriations and electoral issues for the U.S. Congress. WHERE: Double Tree Hotel and Executive Meeting Center Portland - Lloyd Center, 1000 N.E. Multnomah, Portland WHEN: Tuesday, Jan. 15, and Wednesday, Jan. 16 WHO: Tribal leadership, senior professional tribal staff, federal grant-funded tribal or tribal organizational program managers, legal, policy advisers, government and public affairs, communications staff, political organizers and other interested parties. There will be limited scholarships made available for elders and students. WHY: The training goal is to provide key insight into the political and official federal stakes that will be in play and the potential dynamics that could possibly affect Indian Country in 2008. This will be a training that will provide participants with key information, education and strategic tools of how to be effective in advancing the Indian Affairs agenda and key priorities. DETAILS: The following topics will be addressed during the two-day conference: Overview of the official/political landscape; federal legislative and budget appropriations issues; former and current staffers panels; federal appropriations and the earmark: the process, timelines, sensitivities and the official/political impacts of ‘pork’; political and official appointments and assignments; how Indian Country can affect and influence the process; creating and fostering relationships; the native vote 2008 and the official and political message it can register with the executive and legislative branches. The cost for the two-day training is $250 to include materials, and two lunches. Both on-site registration and online registration will be accepted.
