Tram progress
The tram is more than half finished. At the upper station on Marquam Hill, the 200-foot elevator and stair-core tower will top out in a few days and erection of the steel supports will get under way in July. At the lower station in the South Waterfront, the drive equipment has been installed, steel erection is under way and the ropeway saddles have been put in place. Fabrication of steel for the 195-foot intermediate tower that will rise near Macadam Avenue is nearly finished. The tower will be barged in three segments to the South Waterfront site this weekend from Thompson Metal Fabricators in Vancouver, Wash., and erection will begin immediately thereafter. Dopplemayr has completed fabrication of structural, mechanical and hydraulic components. The Swiss firm Gangloff is finishing work on the outer skins of the tram cabins, which are expected to be shipped in July. Preparations for installation of the ropeway that will carry the cabins are scheduled to begin in late June. Installation of the ropeway itself is expected to start in late August.
