Biography/Summary 

Dr. Spurgeon received his M.D. degree from Jefferson Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA. He continued his training in Internal Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) where he also served as Chief Resident. Subsequently he completed his fellowship in Hematology & Medical Oncology at OHSU where he conducted clinical and laboratory research in lymphoid cancers. He joined the OHSU faculty at the Center for Hematologic Malignancies in July 2009 as an Assistant Professor.

Currently, Dr. Spurgeon focuses on the care of patients with lymphoid cancers including chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and lymphoma with a special interest in: 1) unlocking the importance of cell signaling in lymphoid cancer pathogenesis, 2) identifying new therapeutic targets, 3) developing novel clinical trials, and 4) designing personalizing treatment approaches.

He is actively involved in the Knight Cancer Institute’s Center for Cell Signaling and in clinical trial development for the Hematologic Malignancies Section. Dr. Spurgeon is a member of the American Society of Hematology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, Southwest Oncology Group and Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.
