Sarcoma
Sarcomas are rare malignancies of the connective tissue and bone that are diagnosed in only about 10,000 patients in the United States each year. They tend to disproportionately affect the young. Because of the rarity of sarcomas, the best care for patients is at a referral center such as OHSU where sarcomas are diagnosed and treated on a regular basis.
Prior to the establishment of the Sarcoma Program at OHSU, many in the region needed to travel elsewhere to seek specialized care for this rare disease. Now experts have assembled at OHSU to provide integrated, multidisciplinary care for patients with sarcoma. In addition to a core of specialized surgeons, medical and radiation oncologists, the team includes experienced pathologists to ensure the correct diagnosis of these tumors and social work support to help patients with the complex and specialized issues that can accompany treatment. Collaboration with other national sarcoma centers provides patients access to innovative treatments through clinical trial participation.
