Prostate Program

The Impact of Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer is the mostly widely diagnosed cancer in American men and behind lung cancer, the second most common cancer killer of men. In 2005 approximately 30,350 men will die of the disease and 232,000 men will be newly diagnosed with prostate cancer. Prostate cancer risk in the Northwest exceeds the national average. Each year, approximately 3000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in Oregon. Another 4,300 men from Washington and Idaho face this diagnosis. Prostate cancer claims the lives 1,100 men in the Pacific Northwest region each year.

Our Mission: Patient-Centered, Discovery-Driven Care for Prostate Cancer
The mission of the OHSU's Cancer Institute Prostate Cancer Program is to deliver unparalleled care to prostate cancer patients, to drive the expansion of knowledge which can be harnessed to advance the treatment and prevention of prostate cancer, and to educate both health care providers and the public about this common malignancy.

Program Goals

  1. State of the art clinical care for men with prostate cancer
  2. Expansion of knowledge about prostate cancer and rapid translation of new knowledge into advances in the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer
  3. Education of both specialists and primary care physicians
  4. Outreach to the public

Annual Conference
Together with the University of Washington and the American Cancer Society, the OHSU Prostate Cancer Program sponsors an annual full-day conference for the public. The conference brings world class speakers directly in contact with patients, families, and advocates here in the Northwest. In 2005, this annual conference is hosted by OHSU on the OHSU campus.
