Genitourinary Malignancies
The Genitourinary Malignancies program at OHSU encompasses treatment of cancers of the kidney, bladder, prostate, and testis. At the core of this program is close interdisciplinary collaboration between nationally-recognized urologists, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists to provide specialized care for patients with cancers of the urinary and male reproductive tracts.
Sub-specialized faculty with a focus on clinical trials and innovative therapies provide patients in the region with cutting-edge treatment. As an example, the program has been a leader in the development of "targeted therapies" for advanced kidney cancer, new "smart" pills directed at the cancer and its blood supply while sparing the body of significant side effects. The development of these new drugs have radically changed our approach to treatment advanced kidney cancer and have given hope to patients for whom previously there were very few treatment options. These new drugs were available to patients at OHSU through clinical trials well before they became widely available. The Prostate Program is renowned for important discoveries including the finding that vitamin D may improve the effectiveness of chemotherapy. Our urologic surgeons are experts in complex surgeries including retroperitoneal lymph node dissection and orthotopic neobladder construction.
Patients with cancers of the kidney, prostate, bladder, and testis have an unparalleled opportunity at OHSU to receive compassionate and comprehensive care from national experts, access to the latest therapies as well as the treatments of tomorrow.
