Gastrointestinal (GI) Malignancies

The OHSU Gastrointestinal (GI) Malignancies Group focuses on the research and treatment of cancers arising from the gastrointestinal tract. GI cancers are a broad group of many different complex cancer types involving the esophagus, hepatobiliary system, pancreas, small bowel and large bowel. Our program provides expert, state-of-the-art multidisciplinary care for the GI cancer patient at OHSU. Our team includes medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, gastroenterologists, pathologists, interventional radiologists, as well as specialized oncology nurses and oncology social workers. Our team meets weekly in a GI Tumor Board to discuss complex cases and formulate multidisciplinary treatment plans for the individual patient. We offer participation in clinical trials through the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG), as well as participation in clinical trials unique to OHSU. We believe strongly in a team approach to your care and support.

We are also extensively involved in wide variety of GI cancer focused research from basis science to clinical trials. Basic science researchers in the group have carried out research on the inductive/supportive role of tissue microenvironment, intestinal stem cell development in gastrointestinal malignancies, and the role of p53 family members in molecular carcinogenesis. Clinical-translational researchers in the group are actively investigating new methods for screening, diagnosis, prevention, and therapy of esophageal, hepatobiliary, pancreatic, and colorectal malignancies. We are also a major research and referral center Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (GISTs) and ongoing investigations are focusing on characterizing the mechanisms of resistance and developing new therapies for patients with these tumors. We strongly believe that a strong and broad based research program will expedite the bench-to-bedside translation of basic and pre-clinical research, and provide up-to-date and cutting edge therapies for your care and support.
