Breast Cancer
At the OHSU Medical Oncology Breast Cancer Clinic, our team of providers will work closely with you starting from your first visit to provide comprehensive state-of-the art breast cancer care. Our philosophy centers on treatment of the whole person, not simply your cancer. In recent years, the treatment options for breast cancer have expanded rapidly, so that not all breast cancers are treated the same way. Our medical oncologists will meet with you to review your diagnosis, provide you with information, and recommend treatment based on your health history and the specific characteristics of your type of breast cancer.
We will talk with you not only about traditional chemotherapies for breast cancer, but also the newest agents, which include the drug Herceptin and the aromatase inhibitors (Femara , Arimidex, and Aromasin). We offer participation in clinical trials through the Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG), as well as participation in clinical trials unique to OHSU. We work closely with surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, oncology nurses, and oncology social workers, and believe strongly in a team approach to your care and support.
To assist in diagnosis, we offer the full spectrum of breast imaging, including digital mammography, state-of-the-art breast ultrasound and breast MRI, and a newly available capability for breast MRI biopsy. We offer stereotactic and ultrasound-guided core biopsy, and can do surgical localizations using digital, stereotactic or ultrasound guidance.
We work closely with our surgical oncology, radiation oncology, and plastic surgery colleagues in order to offer breast-conserving surgery and immediate breast reconstruction whenever medically appropriate. We can often arrange for a surgical consultation the same day as your visit with us, if indicated.
For women with a concern for hereditary breast cancer, the High-Risk Breast and Ovarian Cancer Clinic is available for individualized risk counseling and genetic testing. This clinic is available to women who have already been diagnosed with a cancer, as well as those who do not have a cancer but are concerned about their risk, based on their family history of breast or ovarian cancer.
We also can offer complementary therapies, such as acupuncture for side effects of chemotherapy or hormonal therapy, through the Integrative Medicine Program. We have several support groups that meet regularly and are tailored toward women at different stages of diagnosis and treatment.
In summary, at the OHSU Medical Oncology Breast Cancer Clinic, we believe you should be a full partner with us in every step of your treatment, and will work hard to make sure you receive all the information you need to feel comfortable with your treatment plan.
