What is Magnet?

The OHSU Hospital and Clinics will be applying to the Magnet Recognition Program® for Excellence in Nursing Services, a distinction granted by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the credentialing arm of the American Academy of Nursing. The Magnet Recognition Program® recognizes health care organizations that provide the very best in nursing care and uphold the tradition within nursing of professional nursing practice.

We Value The 14 Forces of Magnetism:

  1. Nursing leadership has a strong voice in planning and policy making.
  2. Organizational structure is collaborative and cultivates a positive relationship between clinical and administrative staff including all disciplines.
  3. Nurses serving in leadership positions are accessible, visible, have a participative style, and value open communication.
  4. Personnel policies and programs are indicative of employer's concern about employees and are created with employee involvement.
  5. Professional models of care are used in the delivery of patient care services.
  6. Staff nurses provide the level and intensity of quality care consistent with the needs of the patient.
  7. Consultation and Resources are readily available, including clinical experts, CNSs and advanced practice nurses, etc.
  8. Nurses are involved in QA/QI activities that are viewed as a mechanism to improving patient care.
  9. Autonomy: Staff nurses are expected to exercise independent judgment consistent with their scope of practice.
  10. The Hospital is viewed as a model corporate citizen with nurses participating in community outreach community programs.
  11. Teaching is an active part of the nursing professional practice model.
  12. Image of Nurses: We are viewed as essential providers of patient care services.
  13. Interdisciplinary relationships are collaborative and indicate mutual respect.
  14. Professional development is highly valued and ongoing opportunities are provided to meet the learning needs of the nursing staff.
