R-1 The first year is a rotating surgical internship with twelve separate month-long rotations. A typical year consists of six months of general surgery, and six months of surgical specialties. Residents are integral members of the surgical team and are directly responsible for patient care. Interns perform, under direct supervision, those surgical procedures that are commensurate with their skills and training. In addition to direct patient care, interns are regular participants in teaching conferences and attending rounds. Protected time for interns to participate weekly in a strong didactic program in surgical principles is required. Also, residents actively participate in teaching the principles of surgery to medical students.
R-2 The second year of residency training continues with eight six-and-one-half week rotations in general surgery and surgical subspecialties which can include burn surgery, trauma, pediatric surgery, SICU, cardiothoracic surgery, and vascular surgery.
