Surgical Critical Care Fellowship The surgical critical care fellowship is composed of a one-year training program housed at the only University based quaternary medical center in Oregon which is also one of two Level 1 trauma centers in Portland. The fellow will spend 10 months of the year devoted to advanced educational and clinical activities related to the care of critically ill patients and to the administration of critical care units and two months of elective rotations which may include dedicated research. Six of the 10 months will be spent in the Trauma and Neurosurgery unit at OHSU. Opportunities for the additional four clinical months are available on pediatric and adult intensive care units at the University, VA and Doernbecher hospitals.

The ICU fellow makes rounds on all trauma and general surgery ICU patients on a daily basis. The ICU fellow is responsible for supervising the residents and insuring that the morning plan is implemented. The ICU fellow is also responsible for helping the residents to identify new problems focusing on complex patients and assist with difficult ICU procedures. The ICU resident notifies the attending of significant changes in status and unexpected problems. The ICU fellow takes overnight call in house approximately one time per week. Administrative responsibilities of the ICU fellow include:

• Formulate and implement new ICU policies and guidelines
• Choose up-to-date and relevant articles for the weekly trauma breakfast
• Perform chart reviews for the weekly Morbidity and Mortality conference
• Lead the weekly multidisciplinary ICU rounds
• Give ICU curriculum lectures to the residents
• Give a grand rounds lecture during the fellowship
• Maintain a record of ICU patients managed and operations performed
• Maintain a record of work hours and days off duty
• Complete monthly evaluations of the faculty and residents

The surgical critical care fellowship at OHSU participates in the NRMP matching process.

To be eligible to apply to our fellowship program, you must have completed at least three clinical years in an accredited graduate educational program in the disciplines of general surgery, neurosurgery, urology, or obstetrics and gynecology. If you meet this requirement, please complete the application in full and mail it to OHSU along with two letters of recommendation and a letter from the Dean of your medical school.
