The hand surgery experience at OHSU is diverse. Major hand trauma and replantation is afforded by a busy Level 1 Trauma Center with a catchment area for critically injured patients that includes all of Oregon and southern Washington. Upper extremity neurologic injuries and secondary reconstructions are frequently referred to OHSU for evaluation and treatment. Referrals from primary care specialties and the Rheumatology Division ensure a broad experience in general hand surgery and rheumatologic reconstruction. Oncologic resections and reconstructions are often coordinated with the Division of Surgical Oncology.
The hand fellow at OHSU will benefit from a close association between the Division of Plastic Surgery and the Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation. A comprehensive upper extremity education is offered including: hard and soft tissue microsurgical reconstruction; tendon repair and reconstruction; nerve repair, reconstruction, and decompression; management of fractures and dislocations from the clavicle to the finger tips; management of all upper extremity joints, including release of contractures, synovectomy, arthroplasty, arthrodesis, rheumatoid reconstruction and arthroscopy, with a special emphasis on disorders of the wrist and elbow; the complete scope of congenital hand surgery; management of tendonitis, Dupytren's contracture, and upper extremity pain syndromes; upper extremity trauma including, fasciotomy, infections, amputations, tumors benign and malignant; management of upper extremity vascular disorders and insufficiencies; and thermal/chemical injury management.
During the fall Freshman Anatomy Course, the fellow has the opportunity to review upper extremity anatomy while preceptoring medical students in the cadaver lab.
Plastic and Orthopaedic Hand Surgery clinics at OHSU allow the fellow to evaluate patients and plan treatment under staff supervision, as well as work closely with the hand therapist who attends the clinic. Longitudinal care is emphasized with full participation in clinics, outpatient management as well as pre-operative decision making and post-operative follow-up.
Veterans Hospital
The Portland VA Medical Center is a new hospital with an efficient operating room and well-run clinic. The Division runs a busy clinic at the VA which is dominated by hand surgery patients, providing a broad range of operative cases, including wrist surgery and arthroscopy and endoscopic carpal tunnel release. Proximity of the clinic to hand therapy and electrophysiologic testing services ensure a close interaction with the therapist and physiologist.
Shriner's Hospital for Children
Reconstruction of secondary burned hand deformities is performed under the direction of Dr. Michael Wheatley. Experience in diagnosing and managing congenital hand anomalies is offered in the clinics of Dr. Wheatley and Dr. Tuan Nguyen.
