Patient Information

Pediatric surgeons at Doernbecher Children's Hospital provide comprehensive surgical care for children 18 years of age and under. Surgical specialties include:

  • Neonatal surgery (birth to four weeks of age).
  • Surgery for cancerous and non-cancerous tumors.
  • Trauma surgery.
  • Laparoscopic surgery.
  • Endoscopy (including bronchoscopy, esophagoscopy, peritoneoscopy and thoracoscopy).
  • Non-cardiac thoracic (chest) surgery.

The pediatric surgery staff are clinicians, educators and researchers. We are involved in many exciting developments in pediatric surgical care. A collaborative team of physicians and nurse practitioners provide our patients with individualized surgical care at all levels, including the most complex and challenging.

We work within a dedicated pediatric hospital and day surgery unit with access to all the expertise of a university teaching hospital. Doernbecher Children's Hospital offers:

  • Medical/surgical pediatric intensive care unit.
  • Medical/surgical neonatal intensive care unit.
  • Pediatric tumor clinic and tumor board.
  • Pediatric radiology.
  • Pediatric anesthesiology/pain care.
  • Home parenteral nutrition service.

We look forward to providing the best possible surgical care for your child. We welcome your questions and invite you to call us at any time.

Office Hours

The Pediatric Surgery office is open 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday. Patients are seen for initial evaluation, or post-operative follow-up, Monday and Wednesday. Elective surgeries are performed on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.

Appointments and Information

To schedule an appointment with Pediatric Surgery, please call 494-7764. If you are a new patient to Pediatric Surgery, or do not have a current outpatient OHSU ID card, you will need to register prior to your visit. As with any other doctor's office, preregistration is necessary to ensure that your account is handled properly. This can be done over the telephone by calling 494-8505.

If your insurance requires that your primary care physician (PCP) refer your son/daughter, please help us by asking your doctor’s office as soon as possible if they have begun the paperwork. We will also be in contact with your doctor’s office to make sure that the paperwork is processed and to obtain the referral number.

Location and Transportation

Please click map or directions to OHSU. Once on the OHSU campus, we are located on the seventh floor of the new Doernbecher Children’s Hospital (situated between University Hospital South and the Veterans Administration Hospital). Prominent signs will direct you to the main entrance. If you enter the hospital from Campus Drive, take the elevator to the seventh floor, turn right as you exit the elevator, turn right again at the first corridor and check in at the "Pediatric Specialties" desk (look for the fish figure hanging from the ceiling in front of the check-in desk).

You may park in the designated "Patient Parking" areas which are marked with the Dolly Doernbecher logo. Parking spots for the disabled are available near the entrance to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. There is a patient drop-off area at the main entrance of Doernbecher Children’s Hospital. There is no charge for patient parking. If you need help with directions or parking, stop at the parking information booth which is located on Veterans Road (or call campus parking at 494-8283).

If you plan to take the bus, Tri-Met bus #8 (Jackson Park Road) runs to and from downtown Portland every 20 minutes. The bus stops in front of Doernbecher Children’s Hospital on Campus Drive and also on U.S. Veterans Hospital Drive. If you enter the hospital from U.S. Veterans Hospital Drive, you will be entering the hospital on the tenth floor. Take the elevator down to the seventh floor. For more information on bus schedules, call Tri-Met at 233-3511.

Financial Arrangements

If you do not have insurance coverage, OHSU offers a staff of financial specialists who are available to help you in a variety of ways:

  • A pediatric financial specialist will help you determine if you qualify for the Oregon Health Plan, and will help you fill out the necessary paperwork.
  • If you do not qualify for the Oregon Health Plan, the pediatric financial specialist will determine if you are eligible for a discount. You will be asked to provide financial information to the specialist.
  • Monthly payment arrangements can be made with our staff or with our billing office. A fee schedule is available upon your request.
