Legacy Health System
Legacy Health System, a non-profit organization, includes Good Samaritan Hospital and Medical Center, Emanuel Hospital and Health Center, Emanuel Children’s Hospital, Meridian Park Hospital, Mt. Hood Medical Center, Salmon Creek Hospital, Legacy Clinics and CareMark Managed Health Care Northwest, PPO. There are currently 1923 physicians on the medical staffs of Legacy Emanuel and Legacy Good Samaritan Hospitals. Legacy employs 75 residents and fellows, and 15-20 OHSU residents and medical students rotate through Legacy at any one time. Dr. Blayne Standage is a Clinical Professor of Surgery at OHSU and the Director of Graduate Surgical Education for Legacy Portland Hospitals. Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital and Medical Center was founded in 1875 by the Episcopal Diocese of Oregon. Legacy Good Samaritan is one of the oldest hospitals in the Pacific Northwest. Located in Northwest Portland, Legacy Good Samaritan provides a full range of inpatient and outpatient services, with special emphasis on its centers of excellence, including the Legacy Good Samaritan Obesity Institute, the Colorectal Cancer Center, the Comprehensive Stroke Center, Kern Critical Care Unit, Rehabilitation Institute of Oregon, Women’s Wellness and Breast Health Center, Legacy Good Samaritan Devers Eye Institute, Comprehensive Cancer Center and Legacy Heart Services. Legacy Good Samaritan is the only hospital in Oregon to have available Breast-Specific Gamma Imaging (BSGI), an imaging technique that can aid in breast cancer diagnosis when a mammogram is inconclusive. Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital is one of only 31 hospitals nationwide to receive the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association’s Get with the Guidelines Stroke(sm) (GWTG-Stroke) 2007 Silver Award. Good Samaritan also is the Legacy center for robotic surgery, currently with two Intuitive Surgical Robots and a center for kidney disease and dialysis vascular access surgery. Legacy Emanuel Hospital & Health Center was established in 1912 by the Lutheran Church. Legacy Emanuel is a tertiary care center located in North Portland. It is a Level I Trauma Center and the base for Life Flight Network, the region’s critical care transport service. Legacy Emanuel houses a variety of specialty services, including the Oregon Burn Center, the Legacy Center for Maternal Fetal Medicine, Legacy Wound Care Center and Legacy Emanuel Children’s Hospital. For the second consecutive year, Legacy Emanuel Hospital received an Organ Donation Medal of Honor from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). Currently, Emanuel Hospital is staffed for 412 beds. An expansion of Emanuel Hospital has been approved by Legacy Health System’s Board of Directors, and will include a seven-story, 230,000 square foot new patient tower. The majority of the tower will house inpatient care for children as well as the Children’s Emergency Department.
