The 'Rose Award' is a program setup as a way for patients, families, and fellow employee's to recognize outstanding patient-oriented services shown by any employee of OHSU. The word 'ROSE' stand for Recognizing Outstanding Service Excellence. The origins of the Rose Award program can be traced back to a 1992 contest in which the winning entry of 'Recognizing Outstanding Service Excellence' (ROSE) was chosen from among 50 other suggestions for a new employee program. Approximately 150 handwritten Rose Award certificates were awarded the first month. From that humble beginning, the rose appliqué (a stiched red rose) quickly became a symbol of pride for OHSU employees. In fact, rose appliqués are so treasured at OHSU that the ROSE Committee periodically receives requests for replacement appliqués when ID badges are replaced, lost or stolen.
