About the Residency Program OHSU offers a 4-year residency in Radiation Oncology with guidelines established by the ACGME Radiation Oncology section. Residents must have successfully completed a one-year internship prior to initiating the 4-year residency. Applications are taken through ERAS since OHSU usually participates in the National Match (NRMP). While we have no specific board score, grade, or research experience requirements, the program now has a research focus. Specifically, all incoming residents will be concurrently enrolled into the Human Investigation Program (HIP) in order to obtain a Master of Clinical Research and/or be prepared to apply for the L.B. Holman Research Pathway of the American Board of Radiology. We have accepted Foreign Medical Graduates in the past. Letters of recommendations from Radiation Oncologists are valued. We know many of our residents from prior rotations in our department as medical students. Questions regarding applications can be forwarded to either Dr. Charles Thomas or Ms. Tracey Browning, residency coordinator, or Dr. John Holland, residency director. Bring treats for residents! Resident's Experience OHSU offers a residency program designed to make clinically-oriented radiation oncologists. Our program accepts 1 resident per year. We experience a vast variety of cases. Most patients are outpatients, although it is not uncommon to see inpatients. We see both adult and pediatric cases. We frequently use IMRT, SRS, or brachytherapy to treat patients. We currently have a 21EX for SRS and IMRT. We do endobronchial, endoluminal, and intracavitary brachytherapy (both LDR and HDR). On average, we treat 50-70 patients per day. A typical day begins around 7 or 8am and finishes around 5:30pm. We have physics on Monday mornings and Wednesday afternoons. We go to tumor boards almost every day. Most of the day is spent on seeing consults and follow-up patients, doing simulations, and treatment planning. We usually see on-treatment patients once a week. Patients are divided evenly among the residents. Friday at noon we have a lecture, usually given by one of the residents or by an attending. We also do weekly chart rounds on Fridays, where residents present new starts and discuss the treatment plan. During the first and second years of training, we are in the radiation oncology clinic. During the third year, we have 3 months of electives (Radiology, Pathology, Medical Oncology). In the fourth year, we have 9 months of elective ( 2 months at Tuality Hospital, 1 month physics, 1 month dosimetry, 2 months research, 3 months outside electives). Back to Top
