OHSU Physician Liaison Program
In recognition of the need for effective physician-physician relationships, OHSU established in 2005 a Physician Liaison Program to connect physicians and other members of the region’s health care community with the OHSU health system specialists, services and resources.
Physician liaisons serve as personal contacts for physicians, and their practice managers and staffs, to promote the best possible communication and interaction between referring physicians and the OHSU health system, and to breakdown referral barriers.
OHSU physician liaisons provide:
- Information on clinical specialists, and new and existing clinical services
- Clarification of referral guidelines
- Assistance resolving referral or access issues
- Information on clinical research trials
- Information on CME opportunities
- Scheduling of speakers for medical staff meetings/retreats
- Scheduling of relationship-building activities such as OHSU specialist visits to community physician offices, and community physician visits to and tours of OHSU
- Other resources such as maps, telephone directories, physician CVs and patient education materials
Information shared with physician liaisons is important to OHSU health system physicians and administration, and is used for identifying community physician needs, and for planning and evaluating services and programs. The program works across the health system to recommend and help prioritize system and service improvements that will make working with OHSU as productive as possible for the referring provider and as beneficial as possible for their patients.
