Welcome to the third year medical student rotation in pediatric pulmonology. The rotation will consist of ten to fifteen days of combined inpatient and outpatient experience in pediatric pulmonology and sleep medicine. Your input and critique of the experience is valued. Please make note areas in which the rotation can improve.
At your earliest convenience at the beginning of the rotation, please stop by the Pulmonary Office in CDRC 2238 to pick up your rotation materials. You should then introduce yourself to the pulmonology administrative coordinator. This person is your administrative contact for the rotation (ext. 4-6652) and is a great resource when you have questions or concerns. You should page the Pediatric Pulmonology attending on call for the week and introduce yourself.
Lectures: You are expected to attend all of your required Core Lectures for the clerkship, and you should inform your attending when it is time for you to go to these. Individual didactic lectures will be given by the pulmonary attendings during this rotation.
Schedule:
Inpatient service:
Rounds typically start between 9:30 and 10 am. As there can be some variability it is best to clarify this on a weekly basis with the on-call attending. Patient assignment will be at the discretion of the attending and the resident on the rotation. Coverage of patients should be based on the perceived educational opportunity a patient provides the resident or the student.
You should know your patient’s vital signs, daily weight as well as the results of any new test (includes labs, PFT’s etc) for morning rounds. You will work with the attending and resident to complete consults in a timely manner.
Outpatient Clinics:
Mondays, 1-5pm: CF clinic
Tuesdays, 9:30-noon: CF clinic
Tuesdays, 1-5pm: General Pulmonary clinic
Wednesdays, 1-3:30pm: Sleep clinic
Thursdays, 1-5pm: Sleep clinic
Objectives of this rotation:
Improve oral and written presentations for pediatric patients. Remember that effective presentations communicate the essential components of a patient's medical condition and offer a reasoned assessment and plan.
Improve the medical knowledge base in topics relevant to pediatric pulmonology. Areas of special focus are: comprehensive examination of the respiratory system, applied pulmonary physiology and pathophysiology, the diagnosis and management of asthma and common pulmonary diseases as well as the evaluation of children for obstructive sleep apnea.
Gain an understanding of the difficulties that patients with chronic lung disease and their families face.
Competencies for this rotation consist of a series of assignments that should help round out the experience:
Complete two comprehensive written work-ups of pulmonology patients, at least one must an inpatient. The write-ups should be no more than four pages and include a reasoned assessment and plan. They should be turned in to Dr. Link by the end of the two week session, or three days before the end of the rotation, whichever applies.
Complete a problem set, and review the answers with Dr. Link over a one hour period before the end of the pediatric clerkship. (An appointment should be set up.)
Prepare a 15 minute oral presentation on an in-depth topic of your choice, preferably based on an experience you had during your rotation. Feel free to discuss the topic with the attendings. Give the presentation to the team before the end of your pediatric clerkship.
There are numerous references that you can use for Pediatric Pulmonology. Some are listed in the packet you will obtain at the beginning of the rotation.
