Welcome to the third year medical student rotation on Pediatric Gastroenterology. The rotation will consist of either a 10 or 15 day combined inpatient and outpatient experience seeing children with various gastrointestinal disorders.
At your earliest convenience at the beginning of the rotation, please stop by the Pediatric Gastroenterology Office in the CDRC 4222 to pick up your rotation materials. You should introduce yourself to Judie McDonald. She is your administrative contact for the rotation and is your resource should you have questions. You should page the Pediatric Gastroenterology attending on call for the week and introduce yourself
Schedule
Inpatient Service
Rounds on the inpatient service usually start at 0900. There will be some variability, so check with your on-call attending. You will be asked to follow one or two patients as well as do at least one consult. You should check on a daily basis your patients vital signs, lab test result and clinical course from the previous 24 hours, and be prepared to present these on morning rounds to the attending. It is also important to develop and be ready to discuss your impression and plan for the patient.
Outpatient Service
You will be expected to attend at least 3 afternoon clinics per week where you will be asked to see one new patient. We will prepare a schedule for you prior to the start of the rotation.
Goals for the Rotation
1. To facilitate the development of clinical assessment skills
2. To improve your knowledge base in pediatrics
Students are expected to attend all of the required Core Lectures for the clerkship, and to attend Grand Rounds on Thursday mornings.
At the beginning of the rotation each student will receive the “Top 10” Manuel which contains articles on common problems in Pediatric Gastroenterology. Reading time will be available during the rotation so you should try to complete all of the articles.
Competencies
1. Complete four written outpatient patient evaluations.
2. Complete one written inpatient consult evaluation.
3. Complete a set of multiple choice questions given to you at the end of the rotation
