Specialty Descriptions

If you rotate at DCH you will spend half your rotation on the general pediatric ward, and half of your rotation on a subspecialty team.

Specialty Descriptions:

Each student assigned to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital (DCH) for their clerkship will be offered the choice of a specialty experience.  Since the clerkship is 5 weeks long with the final week having testing, the clerkship is organized as follows.  Students initially assigned to a ward team for the first 2 weeks, will switch to their specialty for the following 3 weeks, and vice versa such that each student will have ward and specialty experience.

Specialty Weeks:

The structure for the specialty weeks will vary depending on the specialty.  It can be any mixture of inpatient and outpatient clinical experiences.  You may be doing the same clinical work as the residents on that service, or you may be following/seeing patients in a different location than the residents.  You will be encouraged to perform history taking, examinations and discuss impressions and management plans for the patients you see with the attendings and residents.  You may be required to complete a small project or research some topic and present it to your specialty group.  At the end of your 2 or 3 weeks, the faculty who supervised you (individually or as a group) will evaluate you and this grade will be incorporated into your final grade for the clerkship.

During the last Friday of the clerkship, all students will take the NBME Shelf exam.  This exam begins at 9 am and ends at noon.
