Students have a choice of hospital sites for their rotation:
Doernbecher Children’s Hospital (DCH)
Legacy Emanuel Hospital
St. Vincent's Hospital
9-10 students are assigned to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital (DCH), 5 students are assigned to Emanuel, and 1 Student is assigned to St. Vincent's.
In the event more students prefer one site than can be accommodated, a lottery will determine site assignments.
Student Call Requirements:
During your ward team weeks, you will take overnight call approximately once every 5 nights. For those students rotating at Doernbecher, during your specialty weeks, there will be no requirement for overnight call.
Students rotating at Emanuel Hospital will have overnight call q5 for the first 4 weeks. There is no overnight call the final week of the clerkship.
Students rotating at St. Vincent's have call q5 but only until 11 pm, no overnight call is required.
Each student assigned to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital (DCH) for their clerkship is offered the choice of a specialty experience. Half of the students will be assigned to a ward team for the first weeks followed by three weeks on a subspecialty service. The remaining students will begin with two weeks on a subspecialty experience followed by three weeks on a ward team. The structure for the specialty weeks varies depending on the specialty. It can be any mixture of inpatient/outpatient clinical experiences.
On service students may do the same clinical work as the residents. Students may also follow patients independent of the residents. Students are encouraged to perform history taking, examinations and discuss impressions and management plans for the patients they see with the attendings and residents. Students are sometimes required to complete a small project or research some topic and present it to their specialty group. At the end of their 2 or 3 weeks, the faculty who supervised the student (individually or as a group) will evaluate the student and this grade will be incorporated into the student’s final grade for the clerkship.
Getting Started
The first step is deciding which hospital site is preferred. Every effort is made to accommodate student preferences. Please understand that not all student wishes can be honored and students may not receive their top choice.
Students should look over all the hospital and specialty information in the links down the right side of this page to help them make a decision. After students decide on site and specialty preferences they should click on the link at the bottom of this page to choose their preferences.
A week or two after the deadline for form submission students will be sent notification of site assignments.
