SATURN
Student Athlete Testing Using Random Notification Athletes are not protected from unhealthy behaviors. Their rates of drug use are similar to other students. In addition, athletes have an increased risk of anabolic steroid and other athletic enhancing drug use. Unhealthy habits that begin as a teenager can last a lifetime Some have advocated drug testing as a way to deter drug use. Drug testing requires a large commitment in time and resources. No studies have been performed to determine whether drug testing would be an effective way to prevent drug use. SATURN is a National Institute on Drug Abuse program to study whether or not drug testing is an effective method to prevent substance abuse among adolescent athletes.
SATURN is a school based version of the random, no-advance warning drug testing program used by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC).
Investigators are Certified USOC Drug Surveillance Crew Chiefs.
