Excellence in the Biomedical Sciences
Oregon Health & Science University offers an outstanding opportunity for graduate studies in the biomedical sciences. Over the last decade there has been a tremendous expansion of research programs at OHSU. The vigorous research programs and cutting edge research environment have created a unique opportunity for graduate education.
Graduate students are taught and mentored by a Graduate Faculty composed of more than 300 scientists who are located in a variety of academic and research units within the medical school and university. The School of Medicine is one of the top recipients for funding from the National Institutes of Health, the single largest supporter of medical research in the nation. Overall, OHSU scientists bring in approximately $300 million in funding for their projects each year, including numerous training awards for graduate students.
OHSU has grown into a world-class teaching hospital and research center that draws in students, scientists and patients from across the country and around the world. At the same time, we retain our strong commitment to serving our local community and to treating each patient as a unique individual.
Ongoing investments in research laboratories and technologies provide superb physical resources. The innovative Center for Health & Healing is located at the heart of Portland's South Waterfront, accessible by the Portland Aerial Tram. Four floors of the Center for Health & Healing are devoted to research units, including Biomedical Engineering, the Heart Research Center, cancer research, the Clinical and Translational Research Center, and pharmacy research.

STUDENT RESEARCH FORUM - Thank you to all who participated.
MAY 14-15, 2009
KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Dr. Joseph Difranza
University of Massachusetts Medical School
'Ground breaking discoveries in the field of nicotine addiction'
Share your research! Learn about your classmates' findings! Win research money for outstanding presentations! Connect with students from other schools at OHSU!
Networking and learning opportunities abound at the 26th Annual OHSU Student Research Forum on May 14th and 15th, 2009.
The two-day forum provides a venue for OHSU students, staff and faculty to come together to learn about the exciting research happening at OHSU. The Old Library and Auditorium will host student oral presentations on a myriad of topics, a poster session Thursday evening and a Keynote Address by our invited guest, Dr. Joseph Difranza, MD.
Our Keynote speaker, Dr. Joseph Difranza, MD from the University of Massachusetts, is a leader in nicotine-addiction research. His research covers a range of tobacco-related topics including the onset of nicotine dependence, the effects of tobacco advertising, tobacco industry public relations programs, tobacco-related complications of pregnancy, school smoking cessation programs, and the effects of environmental tobacco smoke. Dr. Difranza is recognized nationally for his contribution to the efforts to prevent the illegal sale of tobacco to children.

OHSU Scientists named American Association for Advancement of Science Fellows Paul Brehm, PhD R. Michael Liskay, PhD Researchers Paul Brehm, PhD and R. Michael Liskay, PhD have been named American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Fellows. The honor is conferred for socially distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications. New fellows will receive an official certificate and rosette pin on February 14, 2009 during the AAAS annual meeting in Chicago, Illinois. The AAAS is the world's largest general scientific society and publisher of the Science. Brehm, a Senior Scientist at the OHSU Vollum Institute, is being honored for contributions to understanding the cellular and molecular physiology of gap junctional communication, ion channel regulation, and synaptic mechanisms. Liskay, Professor of Molecular & Medical Genetics, OHSU School of Medicine, is being honored for contributions to mammalian DNA repair and recombination, including early evidence for chromosomal gene conversion and the discovery of a "DNA mismatch repair gene" underlying hereditary colorectal cancer.

Faculty members were nominated and selected by students for excellence in teaching in the MD and Graduate Studies programs, and as Course Directors. In addition, four MD program students were recognized by their peers for academic excellence. Finally, faculty members nominated and selected four of their peers to be recognized in the "Faculty Excellence in Education" Awards. "I think the single most important attribute shared among the outstanding teachers in the School of Medicine is intellectual passion," said John Brigande, PhD, Assistant Professor of Otolaryngology and Cell & Developmental Biology. "What binds us is this unmitigated drive to share what we know with motivated graduate students. Our job as educators is really about helping our students define their intellectual passion. We can lead by example, by showing our students what turns us on and why." The program and full listing of awards is available here: Excellence Awards

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT 2009 Vertex Scholar Awards Allison Fryer, PhD, Associate Dean for Graduate Studies, is pleased to announce the four Vertex Scholars for 2009. Vertex Pharmaceuticals will fund the stipend and fees for these students for one year. A committee of OHSU graduate faculty members reviewed applications from PhD students who have advanced to candidacy, selecting these four students based on their academic excellence and demonstrated commitment to scientific research. Congratulations to these outstanding students! Clayton Winkler - Clayton is a graduate student in the Neuroscience Graduate Program, working with Dr. Larry Sherman. He is studying the ability of hyaluronan oligosaccharides (a polymer of sugar molecules that is found in connective tissue including membranes, joints and skin) to impair movement of T-cells into the central nervous system during inflammatory diseases. Julie Maxson - Julia is a student in Cell & Developmental Biology, working with Dr. Caroline Enns. She is studying how trafficking and processing of hemojuvelin, a protein important in iron metabolism that is mutated on juvenile hemochromatosis, an iron overload disorder, affects it's function. Tara White-Adams - Tara is in Biomedical Engineering, working with Dr. Owen McCarty. Her research focuses on understanding the intricate interplay between blood platelets and coagulation factors in the dynamic environment of the cardiovascular system. In particular, her research investigates the ability of the historically pro-coagulant platelet surface to recruit anti-coagulant blood components and thus limit clot growth. Tara was just awarded an American Heart Research Association grant, which will cover her stipend, and has declined the financial component of the Vertex Award. Chang Liu - Chang is a student in Cell & Developmental Biology, working with Dr. Phil Stork. He is examining what mechanisms control the cellular location and activation of a protein called Rap1, which plays an important role in many cell functions including proliferation, differentiation and adhesion.
