Biography
Dean Sittig, PhD, is the Director of Applied Research in Medical Informatics for Northwest Permanente, the physician's group practice associated with the Kaiser Permanente Hospitals and Health Plan. He holds a masters degree in biomedical engineering from Pennsylvania State University and received his PhD in medical informatics from the University of Utah in 1988. Dean's research interests center on the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of all aspects of clinical information systems. In addition to his work on measuring the impact of clinical information systems on a large scale, he is working on a qualitative study designed to improve our understanding of both the factors that lead to success of, as well as the unintended consequences associated with, computer-based provider order entry systems and clinical decision support. He is also working on several projects to develop Natural Language Processing systems to help researchers utilize the vast array of clinical information currently locked in the freetext records stored in various parts of our electronic medical record systems. Along with Jerry Osheroff, Eric Pifer, Jonathan Teich, and Robert Jenders, Dean has just finished the second edition of a book on clinical decision support entitled, "Improving Outcomes - A Practical Guide to Clinical Decision Support Implementation".
