Biography
Susan received her MD and MSc in Experimental Surgery at the University of Alberta, Canada, and MPH from the University of Washington, Seattle, WA. She completed a residency in general surgery and has Board Certification in Canada. After coming to the U.S. in 1988, she practiced primary care medicine at Group Health Cooperative of Puget Sound (Washington State) for nine years, and was involved in the development and implementation of evidence-based practice guidelines and processes.
From 1999 to 2004 Susan worked at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, leading a systematic review work group within the Division of Diabetes. While at CDC, Dr. Norris published a number of widely-cited reviews and meta-analyses on the effectiveness of diabetes education and weight control interventions, including a number of Cochrane reviews. She also published multiple systematic reviews for the Guide to Community Preventive Services, which provides guidance to public health agencies and policy-makers. Subsequently, she worked at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) in Rockville, MD where she developed a research agenda for the Agency on the health of older adults with multiple chronic conditions. There she also consulted on systematic review methods for the United States Preventive Services Task Force and the Evidence Practice Center (EPC) program.
Susan is currently an Investigator and Assistant Professor at the Oregon EPC, where she leads an international group developing methods for reviews of comparative effectiveness of pharmaceutical agents and devices under AHRQ’s Effective Health Care Program (funded under the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003). Within this same program, Dr. Norris also leads a methods group examining the use and quality assessment of observational studies in reviews, including case series and before-after designs. Susan performs systematic reviews for the Drug Effectiveness Review Project and she leads the Oregon Health & Sciences University staff conducting reviews for the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force for whom she also performs systematic reviews.
