Articles: Jimison's Research Uses Computer Solitaire to Identify Cognitive Changes

That solitaire game that you play at work could help identify early changes in cognitive function, according to recent research by the OHSU Oregon Center for Aging and Technology (ORCATECH).

Holly Jimison, Associate Professor in DMICE and lead author on the the paper, says, "We discovered that we can take an existing computer game that people already have found enjoyable and extract cognitive assessment measures from it." The findings could help identify those with early stages of mild cognitive impairment - a high risk indicator of later dementia. Alzheimer's disease is a common cause of such dementia, and the study offers potential for doctors and researchers working with patients who have the disorder or are at risk for it.

The study has garnered a high level of international interest after being presented at the recent 10th International Conference on Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders in Madrid. The following sites do not represent all the press the study has received, but simply represent the breadth of coverage.
