Our office provides funding and support to the OHSU chapter of the Student National Medical Association. SNMA is the nation's oldest and largest independent, student-run organization focused on the needs and concerns of medical students of color. The OHSU chapter is currently establishing sponsorship of MAPS (Minority Association of Premedical Students) chapters at Oregon State University, Portland State University, and the University of Oregon.
In the fall of 2007, OHSU students also formed a chapter of the Latino Medical Student Association. The LMSA promotes the development of Latino students through educational, volunteer, professional and networking opportunities to foster diversity, higher education, and the improvement of the Latino community.
The SNMA and LMSA students work together to coordinate outreach and professional development efforts. A number of non-minority students have also enlisted as members of both organizations.
