Graduate Students

Because graduate students are busy in their laboratories, our office works to connect them to the greater community in the School of Medicine.  Grad students meet other minority students and faculty at the SNMA/LMSA welcome event in the fall.

A number of our graduate students are also active in diversity outreach and recruitment efforts.  They participate with minority medical students in giving health professions workshops to undergraduate students.  They also represent OHSU at national conferences such as the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) and at the national conference for the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS).

SNMA-LMSA: Student National Medical Association and Latino Medical Student Association

Our office provides funding and support to the OHSU chapter of the Student National Medical Association.  SNMA is the nation's oldest and largest independent, student-run organization focused on the needs and concerns of medical students of color.  The OHSU chapter is currently establishing sponsorship of MAPS (Minority Association of Premedical Students) chapters at Oregon State University, Portland State University, the University of Oregon, and Portland Community College.

In the fall of 2007, OHSU students also formed a chapter of the Latino Medical Student Association.  The LMSA promotes the development of Latino students through educational, volunteer, professional and networking opportunities to foster diversity, higher education, and the improvement of the Latino community.  This year's student leader is Manny Mendoza.

The SNMA and LMSA students work together to coordinate outreach and professional development efforts.  A number of non-minority students have also enlisted as members of both organizations.  This year's student leaders are Dominic Siler (underclass) and Manuel Mendoza (upperclass).

Each year the SNMA sponsors Hills for Humanity, a 5K run and walk to raise funds and awareness for community safety net clinics in Portland.  The race also creates a connection between OHSU students and the greater  Portland  community.
