The goal of CHASM (the Coalition for Health and Affirmation of Sexual Minorities) is the full and harmonious integration of all persons into the academic, social, and professional life of OHSU, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

CHASM seeks to build bridges of friendship and understanding between groups of people. Working together, the members of CHASM offer advocacy, education, and social support to the OHSU community.

CHASM welcomes faculty, staff, and students, together with their friends, spouses, partners, and family members.

• Visitation and decision-making policies
• Nondiscrimination policies addressing sexual orientation and gender identity with respect to both patients and hospital employees
• LGBT-inclusive cultural competency or diversity training
• Domestic partnership benefits for hospital staff

The 26th Annual Conference of the Gay and Lesbian Medical Association will take place October 22-25, 2008 in Seattle, Washington. The world’s largest gathering of LGBT healthcare professionals offers continuing medical education (CME) and continuing education units (CEUs) for conference attendees. The conference is remarkable for its size, scope, and diversity of programming.

Beginning in the Fall of 2007, students, faculty, and staff from the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Dentistry began meeting in an effort to create an organization to represent the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, questioning and queer individuals who make up the OHSU community.   The goals were to build a sense of community at OHSU for sexual minorities as well as to act as a source of visibility and advocacy for all sexual minorities who interact with OHSU. Out of this effort has come CHASM, the Coalition for Health and Advocacy for Sexual Minorities.
