OHSU School of Medicine Diversity Achievement Programs

Medical Degree Post-Baccalaureate Conditional Acceptance Program

Health Careers Workshops

Equity Summer Research Program

Overview

The Diversity Achievement Programs are key to the School of Medicine’s strategic goal to enhance diversity among medical & graduate students, residents and faculty.

The Medical Degree Post-Baccalaureate Conditional Acceptance Program, Health Professions Testing Program, and Equity Summer Research Program are designed to advance the academic, career and personal development of educationally and economically disadvantaged students.  We provide in-depth experiences to enable students to successfully progress into health care careers.  Through these programs we hope to graduate a more diverse group of physicians and researchers, leading to improved care for medically underserved populations.

We provide access to role models, job shadowing and interaction with health professions student mentors. Discussions and clinical experiences related to cultural competency are integral to our programs.   Early identification, focused academics, mentoring, advising, preparation for the MCAT entrance exam and professional development are key to the curricula.  We assist our students with negotiating socioeconomic, educational and cultural barriers to make them better prepared to enter and complete training in the health professions.

Definition of Disadvantaged

Not all students have the same educational opportunities. Educational disadvantages may include obstacles to learning such as attending schools which suffer from a lack of quality instruction or without academic coaching; a family environment which does not contribute to positive reinforcement of education; or an educational environment lacking in support and mentorship for science and math.  Some students experience cultural, sociological or economic barriers.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Do I need to submit letters of recommendation to the Post-Bac Program if I have already submitted them to OHSU during the general cycle application process as a part of my secondary application?

A: You may if you wish.  However, there is a Release of Admissions Materials form included in the Post-Bac Application which releases your already submitted admissions material for review by the Diversity Achievement Program to use in evaluating your application.  Be sure that your signature is on this form.

Q: Do I need to turn in official transcripts as a part of my part of my Post-Bac Application?

A: No, part of the Post-Bac Application is releasing your already submitted admissions material to the Program for consideration, including the course numbers, grades and course descriptions as submitted through AMCAS.  Later, in order to matriculate into the M.D. program, you will need to provide official transcripts and meet all of the other requirements outlined by the Office of Admissions.

Q: When will decisions be made regarding the Post-Bac Program?

A: Typically, we expect to extend offers for interviews in early May.  Interviews will be conducted in May, and offers to join the program will be extended as quickly as possible.

Q: What is the cost of tuition?

A:  OHSU’s Post-Bac program does not charge tuition to participants.  You will likely be taking courses at Portland State University during Fall term, and you are responsible for that tuition.

Q:  Does OHSU offer financial aid to Post-Bac students?

A:  Post-Bac students are not formally enrolled at OHSU under the current program, so they do not qualify for financial aid through OHSU. The Post-Bac program gives participants a living stipend (currently $1500 / month) from September – June.
