The Edward S. Hayes Gold-Headed Cane Award of the School of Medicine is presented annually to a member of the graduating medical class who has been selected for this honor by a vote of his or her peers and teachers. The award recognizes compassionate devotion and effective service to the sick, with the conviction that its holder will forever epitomize and uphold the traditions of a true physician.

The John A. Resko Research Achievement Awards recognize outstanding contributions to biomedical research in the School of Medicine and are presented to a graduate student for an outstanding doctoral thesis and to a faculty member for outstanding accomplishments in research and in the mentoring of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. The awards are in honor of John A. Resko, PhD, Chairman and Professor Emeritus, in recognition of over 30 years of excellence in research, mentoring and leadership of the basic science graduate studies program.

The Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Awards are presented to a graduating medical student and to a physician faculty member who are judged by his or her peers to best exemplify the humanistic qualities of a physician. These awards recognize consistent expressions of compassion, empathy, respect and sensitivity toward their colleagues and patients, while maintaining the highest ethical standards and devoting themselves to the welfare of our citizens who are most vulnerable and in need of care.
