Congratulations Class of 2009!

Image of Dean RichardsonOn June 4 it was my great privilege to take part in our annual hooding ceremony. Friends, parents, children, grandparents and others — including many of our faculty members — came together to celebrate the enormous achievements and hard work of our newest graduates. Energy, excitement, joy and relief all combined to make this a wonderful and unforgettable celebration.

Our 262 graduates — 107 MD degrees, six MD/PhD degrees, eight MD/MPH degrees, 26 PhD degrees, 36 Masters of Physician Assistant Studies degrees, and 79 Masters degrees — join a long and proud tradition dating back 122 years to 1887 when the OHSU School of Medicine was first established.

I am pleased to welcome the Class of 2009 into our distinguished community of men and women who dedicate their lives to health and healing.

signI also want to thank our faculty members who contribute to the education of our students. Your dedication to educational excellence and professionalism are essential to who we are and what makes our school great. Your commitment to teaching and to guiding this next generation of providers and scientists is, by extension, a commitment to the health and well-being of the countless people in Oregon and around the world whose lives will intersect with our graduates.

At this time of year, we also recognize exceptional students and faculty with honors and awards. Congratulations to all of you. You’ll find a list of these award recipients below.

To our graduates: you will be missed, but we will watch with pride as you move into the next phase of your career. The future of health care needs great things from you and I am confident you are all up to the challenge.

Best wishes and congratulations everyone!

Mark Richardson, MD, MBA
