RESIDENCY TRAINING ENVIRONMENT

The residency training program takes place in the context of the only academic medical center in Oregon and Southwest Washington, Oregon Health & Science University.  Our residency program is a part of the Department of Molecular and Medical Genetics and is one of only two genetics training programs in the Pacific Northwest.  Oregon Health & Science University geneticists provide nearly all the genetic services in the region. With 10,000 employees, Oregon Health & Science University's main campus is perched on a wooded hill overlooking downtown Portland, the Willamette Valley, and Mount Hood. Major on-campus institutions include University Hospital, Doernbecher Children's Hospital, Shriners' Hospital, and the Veterans Administration Hospital and their associated clinics. In addition, the Child Development and Rehabilitation Center, the Casey Eye Institute, and other affiliated organizations are located within easy walking distance.

The faculty in the Department of Molecular and Medical Genetics have training in multiple medical specialties such as Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Clinical Genetics, and Internal Medicine.  The array of knowledge by our faculty in addition to seminars and other educational opportunities produced by basic science and clinical departments are an important feature of the intellectual landscape.

Service Laboratories:

The Department's fully accredited Clinical Genetics Service Laboratories (Cytogenetics, Molecular Diagnostic Center, Biochemical Genetics) are recognized as among the very best in the nation, and are an integral part of all our training programs. The closely-affiliated Division of Biochemical Genetics in the Department of Pediatrics is staffed by three full-time and one part-time ABMG-certified Clinical Biochemical Geneticists. Their clinical activities are also an important part of the Residency Program.

Research:

Oregon Health & Science University has developed recognized excellence in quality medical research.  Research opportunities exist in all areas of medical genetics. Many of the faculty in the Department of Molecular and Medical Genetics are involved in medical research, some in addition to their clinical practice.  In addition, Oregon Helath & Science University houses an NIH-supported General Clinical Research Center, which facilitates the execution of clinical research protocols.

Other certified Departmental training programs include:

  • Ph.D. in Molecular and Medical Genetics
  • Fellowships in Cytogenetics, Biochemical Genetics, and Molecular Genetics
