RESIDENCY PROGRAM APPLICATION PROCESS

Application Requirements

  • M.D., M.D/Ph.D., or D.O. from an accredited U.S. institution, or foreign equivalent with ACGM / ECFMG-approved documentation.
  • Two years of an ACGME-accredited residency (or written verification from ABMG/ACGME documenting equivalency of foreign training) in a clinical discipline prior to starting the program. All other things being equal, we will favor applicants who have completed the full term of another residency program.
  • Ability to obtain a limited or full license to practice medicine from the Oregon Board of Medical Examiners.
  • Basic courses in eukaryotic/mammalian genetics, e.g. obtained in college, medical school, or graduate school.
  • Ability to produce supportive letters of recommendation from appropriate educators and mentors.
  • A strong, well-founded desire to become a practicing medical geneticist.
Application Procedure
The Medical Genetics Residency Program does not participate in Resident Matching systems. All applicants must submit to the Director of Medical Education the following materials:
  • Standard Oregon Health & Science University application (download application form).
  • Curriculum vitae.
  • One-page statement naming the program for which they are applying, describing their interest in Medical Genetics, and defining their training goals.
  • Names, addresses and telephone numbers of two professional references whom they have asked to write letters of recommendation (in English) to be sent under separate cover. For M.D.s (or D.O.s), one letter must be from the director of the prior residency program. For M.D./Ph.Ds, one letter must be from their thesis advisor, the director of the graduate program, or from a post-doctoral research fellowship mentor. Additional letters from appropriate individuals may be submitted optionally.
  • Foreign applicants must also supply (a) TOEFL certificate (except native English speakers), (b) certified translations of any certificates or degrees in foreign languages, (c) other documentation to establish the equivalence of their training to training in the U.S.A. and (d) current visa status and eligibility.
Application Deadlines
Applications for July 1 openings are generally accepted until November 1stof the previous year. Under special circumstances, applicants may be admitted in the middle of the academic year, so inquiries are encouraged at any time. Applications are not complete and will not be reviewed until all of the materials listed above are received.

Interviews
Selected applicants may be invited for on-campus interviews.

Selection and Notification
Applicants will be notified of admission as soon as a decision is made. The applicant is then expected to make a commitment to enroll or to decline the position in a reasonable time period. In the latter case, offers may be made to other candidates. The Admissions Committee reserves the right to leave an opening unfilled if no desirable candidate accepts an offer.

Note for Residency Applicants
For appointment as a House Officer (Resident) at Oregon Health & Science University (once accepted into the program), the following are required by the Graduate Medical Education Office:
  • Dean's letter verifying graduation from medical school. Certificate will not suffice.
  • Written verification, including dates and program name, for all previous training. Certificate will not suffice. (Appointment may be made contingent upon receipt of documentation of completion of a program active at the time of application for appointment).
  • Verification of all staff positions.
  • ECFMG verification. Certificate must be valid indefinitely or through the starting date of appointment.
  • All house officer appointments are contingent on the individual meeting the physician licensure requirements of the State of Oregon.
All applicants to the Clinical Genetics Residency Program should be prepared to fulfill these requirements if accepted into the program. Any questions about general requirements or queries from foreign medical graduates should be directed to the Oregon Health & Science University Office of Graduate Medical Education.
