CLINICAL GENETICS RESIDENCY PROGRAM
The Department of Molecular and Medical Genetics offers several comprehensive, integrated training programs in the clinical, laboratory, and scientific aspects of human genetics. The Medical Genetics Residency is a two year clinical and research training experience for physicians with an interest in the diagnosis, counseling and management of patients with inherited disorders. A broad range of disorders are encountered encompassing the prenatal, pediatric, and adult age groups in the prenatal, metabolic, and general genetics clinics. Chromosome abnormalities, malformation syndromes, inborn errors of metabolism, single gene disorders, disorders with complex inheritance, cancer pre-dispositions, musculo-skeletal abnormalities, pre-symptomatic diagnosis, and unknowns are among the diagnoses seen. In addition, the resident will gain proficiency in the selection of genetic tests and the evaluation of laboratory data which are relevant to medical genetics diagnosis and management. This specifically includes the interpretation of results from the Cytogenetics Laboratory, the Biochemical Genetics Laboratory, and the Molecular Diagnostic Center. In addition to traditional clinical environments, the resident also participates in medical genetics practice in an HMO environment. Residents also participate in the research programs of department faculty. The breadth and balance of exposure to diverse areas of medical genetics is a major strength of the Oregon Health & Science University program. The program's comprehensive treatment is designed to prepare the physician for the certification examination by the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG). We are fully accredited by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), and the American Board of Medical Genetics.
