Cardiopulmonary Surgery Course No.: CSUR 709A Duration: 4 weeks Credits: 6 Term: Any Prereq: SURG 720 Contact: Dr. Pasala Ravichandran, 4-7820 Clinical clerkship in cardiopulmonary surgery with laboratory experience. This course provides close exposure to all aspects of cardiac and thoracic surgery including congenital heart surgery on neonates and infants, surgery for valvular and coronary heart disease, surgery for arrhythmia, and heart and lung transplantation. Students work with house staff and faculty with responsibilities for working up patients, assisting in operations and following postoperative care. Laboratory experience includes heart, heart-lung, double-and single lung transplantation in primates. Preliminary reading in adult and pediatric cardiology would be helpful.

Surgical Intensive Care Unit Course No.: SURG 709A Duration: 4 weeks Credits: 6 Term: Any Prereq: SURG 720, MS4 Contact: Dr. Karen Kwong, 407344 Clinical Subinternships are offered at OHSU or the VAMC Hospital. Students participate in patient care in the surgical intensive care unit and learn principles for managing severely ill, injured, and postoperative patients.
Clinical Experience Community Setting Course No.: SURG 709C Duration: 4 weeks Credits: 6 Term: Any Prereq: SURG 720 Contact: Dr. Karen Kwong, 4-7344 A clinical preceptorship in general surgery is offered with a specific community surgeon (student is responsible for making arrangements). Students participate in the evaluation of patients in the office and in their pre-and post-operative care as well as assist in surgery.

Rural Surgery - Three Rivers (Grants Pass) Course No.: SURG 709K Duration: 4 weeks Credits: 6 Term: Any Prereq: MS4 Contact: Dr. Mark Deatherage Students will be assigned a preceptor surgeon who will supervise their experience. The majority of the time will be spent in general surgery but will have the opportunity to rotate through other surgical specialties including ENT, Urology, Gynecology or Orthopedics. Students will (1) Have exposure to a rural general surgery practice and identify the important issues involved in being a rural surgeon (that differ from practicing in a tertiary referral center), (2) Develop a higher level of comfort evaluating, diagnosing, and treating surgical patients, (3) Identify critical points in inpatient and outpatient follow up of surgical patients, (4) Have exposure to the broad spectrum of rural general surgical procedures, and (5) Hands on experience with minor office procedures.

Surgical Nutrition Course No.: SURG 709N Duration: 4 weeks Credits: 6 Term: To be arranged Prereq: SURG 720 Contact: Dr. Karen Kwong - 4-7344 Dr. Robert Martindale - 4-9145 4-Week elective requiring 5-10 hours per week of discussion/didactic sessions with faculty, plus 20-30 hours per week of clinical responsibilities - will average about 35 hours per week over four weeks. Students will be expected to take overnight call on a schedule determined by faculty availability. Student responsibilities include working up patients, participating in operations, and postoperative care of patients on the OHSU surgical services. Students will participate in teaching and patient care rounds with surgical, wound care, nutritional, and multidisciplinary teams. Didactics and discussions will focus on topics and literature relevant to surgical nutrition. In clinical duties, special emphasis will be placed on care of patients with special nutritional needs. At the completion of the rotation, students should be able to design and implement a plan for nutrition management for a patient throughout the course of their surgical condition.

Research in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Course No.: PLAS 701A Duration: 4-8 weeks Credits: 6 Term: Any Prereq: SURG 720 Contact: Dr. Juliana Hansen, 4-7824 Students actively participate in a clinical or laboratory project with ample opportunity to learn how to prepare and publish a research paper from beginning to end. Students may either perform a clinical/laboratory research project of their own or actively participate in one that is underway. Depending on a student's initiative, there is opportunity to be a coauthor on a publication or presentation at a national surgical meeting. If a student's work is accepted at such a meeting, expenses will be paid for the student to present the paper. Current projects include: small bowel transplantation, bone-graft substitutes, cytokine studies in surgical patients, and other surgically related projects.
Surgery for Dummies: An Introductory Course to the Operating Room Course No.: PLAS 705A Duration: 2 weeks Credits: 1 for class; 2 for extra credit Term: Winter Prereq: MS1 or MS2 Contact: Dr. Juliana Hansen, 4-7824 This class is designed to introduce first and second year medical students to the operating room. The class will consist of 5 combined didactic/practical sessions each two hours long. They are as follows: Intro to the Operating Room, Instruments of the OR, Knot Tying, Running Suture, and the final Practicum. Students will be able to obtain 2 extra credits by working with a surgeon of their choice on an upcoming surgery. To obtain extra credit, you must read about the upcoming surgery, interview the patient, attend the surgery, fill out the provided forms, write an op-note, have the surgeon sign the notes, and hand them in.
Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Course No.: PLAS 709A Duration: 4 weeks Credits: 6 Term: Any Prereq: SURG 720 Contact: Dr. Juliana Hansen, 4-7824 Students are exposed to an extraordinary variety of congenital and acquired defects in both children & adults. Cranio-facial anomalies, maxillofacial trauma, microsurgery, and unusual surgical problems are seen daily. Cosmetic surgery and reconstructive surgery of the hand, head, neck, torso, and lower extremities are common procedures. Students will have the opportunity to evaluate patients and actively participate in the operating room, clinics, and wards interacting directly with the attendings and plastic surgical residents.

Urology/Renal Transplant Course No.: UROL 709A Duration: 4 weeks Credits: 6 Term: Any Prereq: SURG 720 Contact: Dr. John Barry, 4-8470 Students participate in patient care in adult urology and renal transplant clinics and in the University Hospital as part of the renal transplant service, including assistance during urological and transplant operations. Students are introduced to transplantation immunology and selected urologic specialty topics through readings, conferences, patients care and attending rounds.
Pediatric Urology Subinternship Course No.: UROL 709B Duration: 4 weeks Credits: 6 Term: Any Prereq: SURG 720 Contact: Dr. Steven Skoog, 4-8470 Students function as interns on a service staffed only by a urology resident and staff. They actively participate in surgery to the extent of doing minor cases. This experience provides an excellent preparation for students interested in surgical careers.
Clinical Experience General Urology Course No.: UROL 709C Duration: 4 weeks Credits: 6 Term: Any Prereq: SURG 720 Contact: Dr. Eugene Fuchs Students function as subinterns on the University adult urology service, including both inpatient and outpatient work. The curriculum focuses on: urology oncology, male infertility, stone disease, and other common urological disorders.
Adult Clinical Urology Course No.: UROL 709V Duration: 4 weeks Credits: 6 Term: Any Prereq: SURG 720 Contact: Dr. John Barry, 4-8470 Students function in a "subintern" role on the urology service at the Portland VA Medical Center, and participate in all educational activities of the OHSU urology program. Students can expect to observe and participate in the management of wide variety of adult urological disorders including bladder outlet obstruction, hematuria, urologic cancers, UTI, stone disease, erectile dysfunction, and continence problems.
