Clinical Opportunities
In order to be covered by OHSU Malpractice Insurance, you also need to be registered for a course (maximum 1 credit allowed) or doing some research or a community project. There will be a charge of $60 billed to your OHSU account and you need to fill in a form available from Marcia DeCaro in the Dean’s office.
Rural Family Medicine Experience
Students between their MSI and MSII years may spend a week (or more) working with a rural family physician and living with his or her family. You will earn one elective credit as well as a concentrated clinical experience. You can arrange this for any week during the summer and choose from family physicians practicing all over the state. Volunteer Experiences at Clinics for the Underserved
There are many clinics throughout the Portland area that serve the homeless and underserved. If you work with a physician, you will probably be able to see patients as a medical student, presenting them to the staffing physician. Other clinics may have you performing different functions such as checking in patients or taking histories and vital signs. Some possibilities include:

American Medical Student Association (AMSA) End of Life Education Fellowship
Six weeks, the 2007 Dates TBA. Applications due in early April. Twelve students will be selected for this experience of working at hospices and palliative care centers in Chicago or Miami. Stipend provided to cover living expenses. Participants expected to implement End of Life curricula at your medical school. Appalachian Preceptorship
Sponsored by the Department of Family Medicine, James H. Quillen College of Medicine in Tennessee this 4 week preceptorship accepts 15 students. There is one week of didactic sessions (usually beginning the Friday after the fourth of July) and 3 weeks with a rural physician practicing in an Appalachian community. This is an elective eligible for OHSU credit. Applications due by March 15, 2007; notification in mid-April. http://fammed.etsu.edu. OHSU was recently funded by NIH to sponsor two research opportunities for OHSU students enrolled in doctoral programs (MD, DMD, PhD, PharmD). This is part of an exciting program funded to improve the translation of research from the bench to the bedside and to the community: the Oregon Clinical and Translational Research Institute. The program for predoctoral students is designed to increase the pipeline of academic clinician-scientists and to provide practical research experience. All research proposed in this T32 must involve either clinical or translational research, defined as research with human subjects or populations, or with direct application to human health. Government Relations Internship Program (GRIP)
AMA sponsored 6-8 week (June- August) summer internship in Washington, D.C. for 15 students. Design your own program or work with AMA office, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology and the American Society of Anesthesiologists. Research Opportunities
OAFP/AAFP Summer Externship Award
This award allows the selected student to work with a family physician in Oregon on a clinically related research project. There is a $2000 stipend paid to the student. There is an expectation that there will be a published paper or presentation at a medical meeting as a result of the experience. Applications due January 30th. OHSU General Clinical Research Center (GCRC)

Oregon Rural Practice-based Research Network Student Summer Research Program, OHSU
Each summer, ORPRN provides opportunities for 2 medical, MPH or PhD students to conduct clinical research within the network under the mentorship of an OHSU faculty member and an ORPRN clinician. With assistance from the Network’s clinicians, students develop a research question and methods, conduct the research, and help disseminate the findings of the study through abstracts, poster sessions and publications. Often the research studies include travel to clinics around the state, and opportunities to shadow rural clinicians. Applications are due by February 19, 2007. Tartar Trust Fellowship
Tartar Trust Fellowships support research endeavors in the OHSU School of Medicine. Open only to Oregon residents, applications are available from Sandra Kollenburn (4-5649) and must be received by February 15th by 12 noon. The award is up to $2000. The Medical Student Training in Aging Research (MSTAR) Program Eight to twelve weeks at one of seven National Training Centers. Stipend is $3462 for 8 weeks. Applications due February 7, 2007. Children’s Hospital Los Angeles/USC Summer Oncology Fellowship Program
20 applicants selected in early April for a minimum of six weeks. Weekly stipend of $225 with reimbursement for travel and housing on a case by case basis for students from outside the greater Los Angeles area. . Deadline for applications is February 14, 2007. www.chla-sof.nant.org
NIH/NCI Summer Student Fellowship Program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center
Eight-week program for 25 medical students. $5000 stipend. Fellowships will be offered for summer 2007 and information will be on the website (www.mskcc.org/summerfellowships). Deadline in 2006 in late January for Dean’s recommendation letter and all materials by early February. Summer Oncology Research Program – Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo, New York 8-week basic science or clinical research opportunity. Leadership Training
- AMSA in 2006 offered the 4th annual Leadership Training Program for Complementary and Alternative Health. The Hope Alliance
The trip to Peru is an opportunity for OHSU students to work with medical students from the University of Utah in temporary clinics throughout Peru. The Hope Alliance is a non-religious charitable organization. The trip costs are from $2000-$2200, including hotels and food. Trips are usually from late June until late July; OHSU students have gone for the last two years and have positive reports on the experience. Jon Williams, MS3, is available to answer specific questions.
American Medical Student Association (AMSA) International Programs

Himalayan Health Exchange International Health Camps
Go to www.himalayanhealth.com/student.htm for descriptions of medical/dental camps scheduled in the remote regions of north India and Indo-Tibetan Borderlands. Each trip is designed to provide care to approximately 1,500 underserved patients; student participation is limited to 25 each trip. Students are responsible for arranging their own funding to meet expedition costs and must be willing to put in a minimum of 6-8 hours of clinical work, each day, for the duration of each clinical period.

PeaceHealth El Salvador Medical Brigade

The El Salvador Medical Brigade experience has been set for Feb 9-18, 2008. This will be a 4 week block in International Medicine. The student will spend that 4 weeks in Eugene and in El Salvador. A subsequent brigade will occur the following summer (sometime in June- August) which will focus on providing eye care and surgery.
