Resident Wellness Program

   •  Are you worried all the time?
   •  Are you feeling down, on edge, or overwhelmed?
   •  Are you frequently negative or irritable?
   •  Do you feel isolated, alone, or cut-off from others?
   •  Do you feel like an imposter at times?
   •  Are your relationships with others suffering?
   •  Are you experiencing high levels of stress?

If you answered yes to some or all of these items, you are not alone. Up to 70% of residents experience professional burnout at some point in their training.

We are here to enhance the well-being of residents and fellows with education and counseling services.

Many residents and fellows struggle to manage the unique demands of medical training. Many wonder if they will ever "have a life."  Sometimes, we can bounce back from severe stress but other times we can become overwhelmed and need professional help to be more resilient. Why wait for your stress levels to become extreme? We are here to help.

Residents and fellows can receive free, confidential counseling services on site here at OHSU. We are here to help you address any problems or concerns that may or may not be related to training.

You do not need to be in crisis, you may just want to talk.

Counseling can help you

   •  Manage stress better
   •  Set more realistic expectations
   •  Be more productive and effective at work
   •  Resolve relationships problems effectively

Services

   •  Brief evaluation and consultation

Confidentiality

Residents are often concerned about confidentiality/privacy. Everyone who  receives services from the Resident Wellness Program is seen in a private location at OHSU. There is no medical record and no insurance is billed or diagnostic code given. No information is shared with programs without written consent unless there is a risk of danger to self or others.

You do not have to report meeting with a Wellness counselor when you apply or renew your medical license: counseling is not reportable.

We are also a resource for referrals “off the hill.” If residents decide to use their private insurance to access services outside of the Residency Wellness Program, primary care physicians as well as mental health providers are readily available.
