The salary levels for residents/fellows for the 2008/2009 academic year are listed in the table above. The annual salary is dependent upon the level of postgraduate training the resident/fellow has completed within the United States.

Benefits

Residents/fellows in their intern year (PGY 1) are eligible for two or three weeks vacation at the discretion of their program director. After the first year, residents/fellows are eligible for three weeks of annual paid vacation. This vacation is not cumulative from year to year. All residents/fellows are entitled to three weeks with pay annually for absence from service due to illness, bodily injury, necessity for medical or dental care, or because of illness or death in the immediate family of the resident/fellow or the resident's/fellow's spouse. Sick leave is cumulative throughout the term of service of the resident/fellow.

Residents/fellows are given an "allowance" from OHSU to cover the cost of group insurance programs sponsored by the university. OHSU's benefit package is referred to as UniversityFlex and allows each resident/fellow the freedom to choose from a variety of medical, dental, disability, and life insurance options. The package also includes a dependent care flexible spending account. Residents/fellows are required to have medical insurance, whether it is provided by OHSU or through a separate plan. In addition, all residents/fellows are required to elect one of the OHSU-sponsored dental insurances and to select at least $5,000 in life insurance coverage. All other insurance coverages available through UniversityFlex are optional. Any portion of the allowance not used toward these benefits is added back to the resident's/fellow's paycheck.

The university provides residents/fellows an opportunity to participate in a limited retirement plan on a voluntary basis, and there is no employer contribution. The plan allows residents/fellows to invest up to 20 percent of their salary, or $10,000 per year, whichever is less, in tax-deferred annuities and mutual funds.

In addition to the benefits outlined above, the Office of Graduate Medical Education will provide lab coats, business cards, pagers, and long-distance authorization codes for the use of residents/fellows during their training. The university also provides on-call rooms and meal tickets for residents/fellows on night call, as well as laundry services for scrubs and lab coats.

Parking is limited on the university grounds. A space, however, is always assured for every resident/fellow. Parking is available at a reduced cost for residents/fellows and can be automatically deducted pre-tax from paychecks. Alternatively, TriMet passes for Portland-area bus and "Max" light-rail services are provided at substantially reduced prices by OHSU. These passes can be used for all Portland-Metro transit service, seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

OHSU does not provide living accommodations for residents/fellows or their families, although the Office of Graduate Medical Education, as well as individual departments, may be able to provide helpful information regarding relocation and housing.

Family Medical, Professional, and Special Leave

OHSU offers Family Medical Leave to residents/fellows, abiding by the State of Oregon and Federal Family Leave Acts (OFLA and FMLA).

Upon occasion residents/fellows may also need to take leave for professional reasons, such as, but not limited to, testifying in a lawsuit unrelated to their training at OHSU. It is left to the discretion of the resident/fellow whether to take this leave as vacation time or as leave without pay.

In addition to family medical leave and professional leave, residents/fellows may need to take "special" leaves of absence for jury duty or for uniformed service (military) leave. The university provides up to four weeks of pay per year for a resident/fellow who is subpoenaed for jury duty. Uniformed services leave will be granted for service or training with the United States Uniformed Services as required by federal and state law. Further questions on leave policies should be directed to the Office of Graduate Medical Education.

Liability Insurance

Professional liability insurance is provided to residents/fellows through the State of Oregon and covers all duties and acts performed within the scope of the training program. A resident/fellow appointed through Graduate Medical Education is indemnified and defended by the university through the provision of the Oregon Tort Claims Act (ORS 30.260 through 30.300) when acting in the scope and course of his/her employment by the university. Indemnification is not limited. The coverage is maintained in such a manner as to create no tail exposure for any resident/fellow after they have completed their training program.

Pre-Employment Drug Screening and Background Check

All OHSU employees with patient contact are required to have and pass pre-employment drug screening, and all OHSU employees are required to have and pass a background check.

Portland VAMC Requirements

OHSU has a close affiliation with the Portland Veterans Administration Medical Center ("VA"), and most of our residents are required to complete rotations at the VA. The VA is a federal employer and requires all residents/fellows who rotate at the VA to sign an appointment agreement, take an oath of office administered by the VA, and be fingerprinted by the VA.

In addition to OHSU, the following institutions offer graduate medical education training programs in the Portland area:
