Graduate Medical Education

Prospective Residents / Fellows

Appointment Procedure

All first-year selections for graduate medical training programs are made through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). The only exceptions are those permitted under the NRMP rules. Many of our programs use SFMatch. All appointments are made through the Office of Graduate Medical Education by the Executive Director of OHSU Hospital and Clinics with the recommendation of the program director. Appointment agreements are sent in late March and are included in the new resident/fellow packets. Selected applicants are required to sign and date the appointment agreement and return it to:

OHSU Graduate Medical Education, L579
3181 S.W. Sam Jackson Park Rd.
Portland, OR 97239-3098
(503) 494-8652

All appointees must obtain an appropriate license for the practice of medicine prior to the beginning of their program. Limited license applications will be mailed to all appointees in the new resident/fellow packets. OHSU requires that interns have a valid limited medical license. Because the Oregon Board of Medical Examiners does not require that interns have limited licenses, OHSU provides funding to cover application fees for interns. After the internship year, a limited or unlimited medical license must be obtained at the expense of the resident/fellow from:

Oregon State Board of Medical Examiners
Suite 620, Crown Plaza
1500 S.W. First Ave.
Portland, OR 97201-5826
(503) 229-5770

Appointments to OHSU graduate medical education programs are made solely on the basis of qualifications. All applicants must have an M.D. or D.O. from an approved school of medicine or osteopathy before beginning their training programs. Applicants for training in oral/maxillofacial surgery must have a D.D.S. or D.M.D. before starting their training.

Residents are selected based on their preparedness, abilities, aptitudes, academic credentials, and communication skills, as well as on personal qualities such as motivation and integrity. OHSU's programs do not discriminate with regard to gender, race, age, sexual orientation, religious preference, color, national origin, disability, or veteran status. When possible, OHSU's residency programs participate in external organized matching programs, such as the National Resident Matching Program.

Graduates of international medical schools who are applying for medical internships, residencies, or fellowships must have a valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). Applicants who are not U.S. citizens must also be able to meet the current requirements for an appropriate U.S. visa. Requests for information or for visa applications should be made to the GME Office or to:

Applicants who are currently in an internship or residency, or who have had previous training, must request letter(s) of verification from their program director(s) and letter(s) of verification of medical staff membership, if any. Graduates of international medical schools must submit a valid copy of their ECFMG certificate.
