Let's talk about healthcare. Let's talk about you. As in your preferences and what’s best for you. At OHSU, patient- and family-centered care means you are why we are here. We know who you are and care about you as a unique individual. We attend to your physical, emotional and spiritual needs. We acknowledge that we are guests in your life. We earn your trust and become your partner. It’s about customizing care that is right – and best – for you. It’s about sharing information with you about our quality and service, and encouraging you to be an active part of your healthcare team. It's about designing healthcare facilities that bring together the best in medical technology and an expert staff that is highly skilled and highly compassionate.
A healing environment Typical patient rooms often feel impersonal and may even lack privacy. They also may offer limited seating for family and friends. We designed Kohler Pavilion, which opened in June, to provide all patients with private rooms, a more peaceful and soothing setting, a family zone so loved ones can be nearby, and large windows to allow patients natural light and panoramic views. Everything was designed to give patients a more personal and soothing environment in which to recover, and the staff an efficient environment in which to provide quality care.

The leading edge of technology The Kohler Pavilion is outfitted with the most up-to-date technology, including wireless infrastructure that allows hands-free communication among the staff and between nurses and their patients. Technology improves quality and efficiency. It’s not only about wires and hardware, though, it’s also about providing the systems our staff members need to create the very best healthcare experience possible for their patients.

Knowledge that empowers our patients and the public Communication is important before, during and after a hospital visit. Today the Web is filled with a variety of competing healthcare report cards that compare pieces of data about healthcare services. OHSU supports easy access for healthcare consumers to current hospital information about the safety, quality and level of patient satisfaction related to the care we provide in our hospitals and clinics. It is through this type of transparency, as well as personal experiences, that patients can determine their level of confidence in the care we provide. That’s why we have led the way by developing a new Quality and Service Web site that provides information we hope is helpful in your evaluation of healthcare services. As healthcare providers, educators and advocates for safe, quality care we think this type of reporting is essential to our community. Asking questions and being an active partner in your healthcare team is just as important as comparing healthcare services. Safety at home means locks and keys and smoke detectors. Safety with your healthcare means asking questions, understanding answers and following instructions. We are a university healthcare system. That means education is very important to us. Sometimes we will share information with you. Other times you will share information with us. Safety is a team effort. We do it together.

The bottom line It's about relationships, trust and communication. Please send your ideas about how we can be more patient- and family-centered to shareit2@ohsu.edu.
