Like all health professions, the field of dentistry is in the midst of dramatic change. From 2000 to 2020, the number of practicing U.S. dentists will decline by 25 percent. Oregon, which is already significantly underserved, will be particularly hard hit by the shortage, especially in rural communities. It falls to the nation’s dental schools to find ways of educating more practitioners for tomorrow’s growing needs.
At the OHSU School of Dentistry, these challenges are playing out against a backdrop of diminishing resources, aging facilities and fierce competition to retain and recruit top faculty members. And as Oregon’s only dental school, OHSU has an additional mandate to improve access to dental care for underserved Oregonians and to pursue leading-edge research into new treatments and technologies.
Bottom line: the need for private support has never been greater, because the need for sustained excellence in dentistry has never been stronger.

Endowment for Excellence in Endodontics
| $2 million goal OHSU has a long tradition of excellence in endodontics education. To ensure it continues to educate future generations of specialists in this vital field, OHSU must have the resources to compete nationally for the best and brightest endodontics faculty. |
Dr. Donald R. Porter Pediatric Dentistry Endowment Fund
| This endowment honors the late Donald R. Porter, D.D.S., the founder of OHSU’s residency program in pediatric dentistry, who specialized in treatments for children with cleft palate and other special needs. The Dr. Donald R. Porter Pediatric Endowment Fund will provide support for pediatric dental research by faculty or residents at the School of Dentistry.
