2009 Report on Giving

A message of gratitude

Bob KrausThis fiscal year we witnessed a milestone in OHSU philanthropy – the first $100 million pledge, an unrestricted gift from Phil and Penny Knight to support the OHSU Cancer Institute. When OHSU President Joseph Robertson announced this transformative gift, he noted that it will “change the game” for cancer care in Oregon.

I thought that was a wonderful turn of phrase, and not just because it reflected the Knights’ connection to sportswear giant Nike. It’s because as donors we tend to be true believers in OHSU’s power to change the game for Oregon. We understand that no other institution can so dramatically improve the health and well being of our state and its citizens.

The same commitment that inspired the Knights this year animated thousands of donors to make contributions of every size to support healing, teaching, discovery and outreach at OHSU’s two teaching hospitals, five graduate medical education programs, and across its many nationally known research and clinical centers.

On behalf of every OHSU Foundation Board trustee, I offer humble thanks for your generosity – and special thanks to the dedicated volunteers whose hard work and advocacy kindled grassroots support in communities throughout the region and among business, philanthropic and legislative leaders.

As an OHSU supporter and friend, your contributions are making an enormous difference for a vital, one-of-kind, game-changing Oregon institution.

Thank you.

Bob Kraus
Chairman, OHSU Foundation
