“It is too late; we can’t do anything to save the vision in your right eye.”

These are the words that my local ophthalmologist told me when my distance vision started diminishing due to macular degeneration. Not being one to take ‘no’ for an answer, I called OHSU.  Surely a teaching hospital would have an advanced program for eye care research, as well as treatment options not available elsewhere.

Thankfully, I was right. For the past five years, I have been treated by Drs. Christina Flaxel and John Boyer at the Casey Eye Institute Low Vision Rehabilitation Center at OHSU. When my friends ask why I travel 150 miles to Portland for my eye care, I am quick to respond that Casey Eye Institute is where I want to be treated. My doctors boost my morale. Beyond the great care they provide, they are terrific influences who give me inspiration. I have witnessed their dedication to finding cures – and their encouragement until that day comes.

As a proofreader, losing my vision was horrendous. With the assistance of my husband, my Ocutech® bioptic telescope spectacles prescribed by Dr. Boyer, and the first-rate care that I receive at the Casey Eye Institute, I manage surprisingly well. And, yes, I do hope for a cure within my lifetime.

This hope is why I am a loyal donor to the Casey Eye Institute. It is important for me to support an organization that is translating passion into action by helping people.

Please join me in making a gift to the Casey Eye Institute. Let’s make sure that no one else has to hear the devastating words that I heard.
