Sanjiv Kaul, M.D., believes the future of cardiovascular medicine lies in tiny bubbles. It is a procedure known to heart researchers as myocardial contrast echocardiography, or MCE. The procedure was pioneered by Kaul over two decades of research, and he hopes that it will lead to earlier diagnoses and better treatment of heart conditions.
“We’re building what will without a doubt become the best cardiovascular imaging center on the West Coast,” Kaul Said. “This is a very ambitious goal and I hope that Oregonians will join us as we invest in this program.”
MCE is a new way of using ultrasound technology to create images of the heart. Kaul says the microbubbles that help create these images will one day be able to deliver targeted therapy to the heart.
Kaul believes that MCE technology will eventually lead to dramatic improvements in treatment of a variety of other ailments, including cancer. For Kaul and his team, those tiny bubbles hold great promise in the future of medical technology.
